About the Museum
Carl Eldh is recognised as one of the most prominent Swedish sculptors
of his time, and the Carl Eldh Studio Museum houses
a large part of his works of art. The museum is situated in
his studio from 1919, designed by the architect Ragnar Östberg,
and the building has remained largely untouched since the death
of the sculptor. This well preserved studio has few counterparts
in Europe and is beautifully situated in Bellevue Park.
More than 400 pieces, mainly in plaster, are on display in the
museum. Carl Eldh’s output spans a wide range, from portraits
to monuments and from nude studies to façade decorations.
His work is to be found in a large number of public places, in
museums and in private collections both in Sweden and abroad.
Amongst his best known sculptures are The
Olympic Runners, Youth,
and his intense interpretations of the Swedish author August Strindberg,
for example The Titan in Tegnérlunden, Stockholm.
Carl Eldh’s daughter Brita opened the museum in 1963. The
principal of the museum is the Carl and Elise Eldh Studio Foundation.
The running of the museum in financed by grants from the Board
of Culture in the City of Stockholm, proceeds from sales of reproductions,
ticket sales and donations by sponsors.
